Overview
Cape Town is South Africa's legislative capital and its oldest city, with about 4.8 million people in the metro area, wrapped around a flat-topped mountain that rises 1,085 metres straight out of the suburbs. Founded as a Dutch supply station in 1652, it sits near the meeting point of two oceans and inside a floral kingdom found nowhere else on earth. The setting is routinely called one of the most beautiful of any city, and that is not marketing.

Landmarks & history
- Table Mountain — A rotating cable car or a two-hour hike up Platteklip Gorge. Check the webcam before committing — the 'tablecloth' of cloud closes the summit view without warning, and the cableway shuts in high wind.
- Robben Island — The prison where Nelson Mandela spent eighteen of his twenty-seven years. Tours are led by former political prisoners, which makes them unlike any other museum visit. Ferries are weather-dependent; book well ahead.
- District Six Museum — A small, powerful museum about the neighbourhood bulldozed under apartheid and the 60,000 people forcibly removed from it. Essential context for everything else you will see here.
Things to do
- Cape Peninsula drive — Chapman's Peak road, the penguin colony at Boulders Beach and the Cape of Good Hope in one long day. Hire a car or take a tour; public transport does not reach most of it.
- The Winelands — Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are under an hour away, with Cape Dutch estates and some of the best-value fine wine anywhere. Use a driver — the tasting portions add up faster than expected.
- Beaches and Kirstenbosch — Camps Bay for the scene, Muizenberg for warmer water and beginner surf. Kirstenbosch botanical garden on the mountain's eastern slope runs summer sunset concerts on the lawn.
Gastronomy
Cape Malay cooking
Brought by enslaved people from Southeast Asia in the 17th century: bobotie, curries fragrant rather than fiery, koeksisters for dessert. The Bo-Kaap quarter is its home.
Braai culture
The South African barbecue is a social institution, not a cooking method. Boerewors sausage, lamb chops and a great deal of standing around the fire.
Wine and rooibos
Chenin blanc and pinotage are the local signatures, and prices at the cellar door are remarkable. Rooibos, the caffeine-free red bush tea, grows only in this province.
